Heads up, everyone. We will NOT be meeting on our usual date in July, the 4th, for obvious reasons. We do not wish to interfere with anyone's Independence Day celebrations or with their family time on a holiday. Thus, we voted to change our July meeting date to July 11th at the usual time (2:00 p.m.), usual place (Historic Research Library, 435 Brevard Ave. in Cocoa Village; west of Bank of America). If you wish to come to our meeting you are more than welcome, just don't show up on the 4th of July because we won't be there. Okay?
Our Show this year will be in a new location since we outgrew our last location. The 2010 Annual Space Coast Post Card Club Space Coast Post Card Show will be held at the Azan Shrine Temple, 1591 W. Eau Gallie Blvd. Melbourne, FL on Saturday, November 13, 2010 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.. Admission is $3 for over 12 (one dollar off with coupon or ad); under 12 free; U.S. Military veterans get in free with proper military identification.
Hello! Welcome to the Space Coast Post Card Club's blog. We are here to try to spread the word about the family friendly hobby of collecting post cards. We would like to invite you to join the Space Coast Post Card Club and learn about the wonderful world of post cards!
If you want to learn about history, post cards can help you with that. If you want to learn about cars, post cards can help you with that. If you want to learn about celebrities, post cards can help you with that. If you want to learn about just about anything, post cards can help you with that.
Or maybe you already have a collection of something going. Ever think of adding a few postcards to that collection? Collect tea cups? Come to our show and you'll probably find at least a few post cards with tea cups on them. Collect frogs? Well, there are post cards with frogs on them, so come and take a look. Collect shoes? That, too, is available on post cards! Just about anything you can think of collecting can be found on a post card.
Or maybe you have a favorite thing. You love cats. Come see the cat post cards at our show. You love koala bears. Come buy koala bear cards at the show. You love dirigibles. There are post cards available with dirigibles on them at the show!
Whatever you can think of — with very few exceptions — there are post cards for: outhouses to birdhouses; aardvarks to zebras; apples to oranges. Our show will have post cards available for almost all of it.
If you want more info on the 2008 Space Coast Post Card Club Post Card Show, please visit our section on it, here. If you want to find out about our Club's monthly meeting time and place, go here. If you have general questions about post cards, go here. I'm sure we can find someone who can give you a good direction to go in for information on your cards, or you can come to the show and show us in person. We'll be there!
Again, Welcome to the blog for the Space Coast Post Card Club!
Hi! This is where you can post your questions about post cards and we will try to answer them. If you can describe them, or if you can post a picture of them somewhere, then we will have a better idea as to what you are asking.
Remember, a lot of the value of the post card depends on its condition. If you have a post card that is without staining, tearing, folds, crackling, peeling, or writing on the front, then that card is considered to be in good to excellent condition. It does not matter in post cards whether the backs were written on or not. It does matter if someone wrote over the picture. It does not matter if it has a postage stamp on it and was sent through the mail as long as the postmark is not on the front (and, depending on the card, that could not matter as well). What matters is the post card itself, the condition it is in, and if anyone famous wrote on it, was mailed it, or sent it; and the message on the back. That's what determines condition.
Another good source for post card answers is books at the library. They can give you ideas as to the values, but they cannot give you a good idea as to the real condition of your post card. Also, remember that book prices are usually centered around big city collecting: Brevard County does not count as "big city". The prices in books may be a bit higher than you would be able to get around here. Just like with cars, houses and food; it's the cost of living index that helps determine post card value in certain areas.
So, if you have a question, ask away and we will see what we can do to help. And if we cannot help via this forum, please feel free to stop by our Club one day and let one of our knowledgeable members take a look. The meeting is the first Sunday of every month at the Florida Historic Research Library, 435 Brevard Ave., Cocoa Village at 2 p.m. (if there is an event, we move to the Cocoa Library). Come by and check us out!
The Space Coast Post Card Club meets at 2 p.m. the first Sunday of every month, usually at the Florida Historic Research Library located at 435 Brevard Ave. in Cocoa Village. If there is an event in Cocoa Village, then we try to reserve a room at the Cocoa Library on Mulberry St. so that we can park easier.
We usually conduct Club business, talk a little and have some refreshments. Sometimes we have a guest speaker or an informatoinal talk given by one of our members. It is a relaxed meeting but we do try to get Club business over with before we start chatting too much. That way the business is over with faster and we can get on with the visiting and eating part.
Some of us have been with the Club since its inception. Charter membership is getting rarer, though, since we started our Club with our first meeting in 2000. We have members aged 21 and up and we enjoy getting together and seeing each other. We also enjoy having new members. Everyone is welcome and if you would like to bring some cards and ask some questions, please feel free to join us.
If you have a question about our Club, please feel free to post here. We will try to check in daily to see if there is anything we can help you with.
Thank you for visiting and we hope you will visit our Club!
The 2008 Space Coast Post Card Club's Annual Space Coast Post Card Show is Saturday, November 8, 2008 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Indian River City Civic Center located at 4220 S. Hopkins Ave. in Titusville at the corner of Knox-McRae and Hopkins, one block west of US 1. Admission is $3 for over 12; under 12 free; with an advertisement or publicity about our show, including printing this page out, you get $1 off admission.
We will have dealers from all over the state (and one or two from out of state) and we will have thousands of post cards available for purchase. If you have your grandma's post cards and would like to get them evaluated (not appraised) by one of our members, and recommendations given to find more info, please come to the Show and bring your cards. Remember, most cards — even the really old ones in perfect condition — are worth between $2 and $12, so they don't all have value except in the memories and associations they bring to us. Some, though have a higher price (alligator border cards) and some (like an original Alphonse Mucha in excellent condition), could bring thousands. So don't throw them out just because you assume they are not worth much. Even a card that is worth only $2 because it's just a generic greeting card ("Thinking of you!", or something similar) can be valuable if the message on the back is from someone famous, has a record of certain historical events, etc.
We welcome everyone to come and see what post card collecting is about and to ask any questions you may have. Who knows? Maybe once you get your answers, you'll want to collect post cards, too!
